Our History

S J Quick & Sons Ltd started life in Penzance, West Cornwall, as a partnership in 1970, working on renovations and small extensions. Over the years, we gradually grew in size and were able to take on larger contracts, including many historical works. We soon became well known and respected for our work on church restorations, with many projects being completed for clients such as English Heritage and The Diocese.

In the late 1980s, we started to work with Trinity House Lighthouse Service and, by the early 1990s, we were working closely with the Engineering Directorate at Cowes on the project to automate the UK’s lighthouses.  The project involved us working alongside the automation teams on the civil works on well known lighthouses such as Portland Bill, The Eddystone, Wolf Rock, Hartland Point, Godrevy and many more. Our work took us from Holyhead to the Isle of Wight, the Isles of Scilly and the Channel Islands.

During this time, Sam and Susan’s three sons joined the business – Martin and William trained as masons, Spencer as a carpenter and joiner.  Each developed their skills and became highly experienced, managing our projects in an efficient and professional manner.

In 2010, Sam and Susan’s daughter, Samantha, joined the company as office manager, having spent many years as a medical secretary at The Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust.

Our firm has developed and grown significantly over the years and is now located in new offices and workshops at Rospeath Industrial Estate at Crowlas, between Hayle and Penzance in West Cornwall.

We employ our own masons, carpenters, painters and general operatives and subcontract other specific services (such as mechanical and electrical services) to trusted, high quality associate firms.

The company is affiliated to the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and, since the 1970s, we have welcomed apprentices into our team (at least two or three at a time) who are then highly trained in ‘old fashioned’, traditional skills of their trade as well as new, modern methods.  Many of our apprentices have gone on to win awards, including Apprentice of the Year.

Working with clients in all sectors…

We have forged strong relationships with many clients over the years and have been pleased to work with them on a variety of jobs.  Having a customer return to us for further projects is of great satisfaction.

Our customers include: The Duchy of Cornwall, Lord Falmouth of Tregothnan, Devon and Cornwall Housing, The Minack Theatre, The RNLI and The National Trust..

Each year, we return to the Isles of Scilly to complete various works over the winter period, often for regular customers.

We specialise in restorations, renovations and refurbishments of historical and listed buildings, including churches and properties in sensitive or conservation areas such as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).  Our team of craftsmen are particularly skilled in working with granite stonework.  At the same time, we are experienced in cutting edge technologies to install, for example, energy efficient solutions such as air and ground source heating.

A project could be a replacement roof or new windows, an extension, a new kitchen or bathroom, lime pointing on existing granite stonework, conversion of an outbuilding, the addition of a garage or a complete new build.

For smaller projects not requiring plans, we will visit your property and quote accordingly. For projects requiring planning permission, we will be able to provide detailed fixed price quotations once we have received your architect’s specifications and drawings.

Each job will be the responsibility of either Martin, Spencer or William, or one of our other highly experienced site managers. Clients will receive a continuity of service throughout the project with open communication and updates. Customer care and satisfaction is our absolute priority on any assignment, regardless of size.

Andrew Burt, Secretary at St Just-in-Penwith Parochial Church Council

‘We appreciate this and all the excellent skilled work that Quicks have been doing for us. We have been fortunate to be able to work with a genuinely local company with the professional and traditional skills needed for our project’.

Lyonesse Guest House, Isles of Scilly

‘S.J Quicks Builders, we could not have wished for a better team. A job such as this, in a location such as Scilly is always going to be more complicated, but they are making the conversion of Lyonnesse so far look easy and so far still on budget!’.

Peter Moore, Director of Cornwall Rural Housing Association

‘My thanks to you, your family and your staff for the co-operative and professional way in which you worked with us to build the new homes on Bryher, St Agnes and St Martin’s. We know from experience how difficult working on Scilly can be, so we were pleased to be able to work with you to provide such good quality homes’.

Nigel Burnett, Director of Trebah Gardens

‘I would like to pass on to Sam and the team my appreciation for such an excellent quality of work and for the professional way in which the whole project was run. I know there were some “challenges” on site (I expect there always are) but these were worked through with due consideration, patience and expertise. The guys on site who undertook the bulk of the work deserve special recognition’.
